Heavyweight Champion Of Grace

People Of The Second Chance have asked me to participate in their Never Beyond Poster Series. A series of 25 original pieces of art depicting people throughout history who have potentially harmed society. If you want to read more about it and see how you can get involved you can right over here.

I’m honored to have been asked to participate in this discussion on the topic of grace and second chances. If you weren’t able to read my first post you can do that here.

A product of a broken home at ten years old, then loses his mom at 16 and is left in the care of his trainer.

”I never saw my mother happy with me and proud of me for doing something: She only knew me as being a wild kid running the streets, coming home with new clothes that she knew I didn’t pay for. I never got a chance to talk to her or know about her. Professionally, it has no effect, but it’s crushing emotionally and personally.”

  • He holds the world record for being the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF world heavyweight titles, he was 20 years old.
  • He’s a former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
  • He defended that title nine times.

and then

  • In 1992, he was convicted of raping Desiree Washington
  • In 1995 he started over from the bottom
  • In 1996 he won two of his three titles back
  • He then lost to Evander Holyfield… in an 11th round TKO

and then

  • Tyson got his rematch with Holyfield… and bit his ear off.

HE.BIT.HIS.EAR.OFF!

At 35 he tried to recover… but didn’t. He tried to fight his way back to the top, he failed. In 2002 he retired, and in 2003 he declared bankruptcy. He was done. Defeated. Destroyed in the public eye. One of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time fades out and into obscurity a despot. And you know what?

Grace is radical… it doesn’t have to be. Maybe someday soon it won’t be. The truth is that we are all the result of the greatest second chance ever given.
